Coffee and Oatmeal Stout

Coffee and Oatmeal Stout

The first in our range of 'Brewer's Series' bottled seasonal beers, Coffee and Oatmeal Stout is a limited edition beer for Christmas 2011 which is currently being distributed throughout Ireland.

A smooth, medium bodied stout made with roasted barley and chocolate malt that has a coffee kick - perfect for those long winter evenings.

This beer was first brewed as a special for Waterford Festival of Food 2011 using oats from Flahavan's Mills in Co. Waterford. We served it in our festival beer garden at The Moorings bar, where it proved a big hit and was later served at the Franciscan Well Easter Beer Festival, Brewers on the Bay in Galway and Bloom 2011. It gained a great following with many calls to produce more so our brewer decided to create a new batch and bottle it for our winter 2011 Brewer's Series seasonal.

For our bottled version we have been working with Brock Lewin from Badger and Dodo boutique coffee roasters to choose a coffee to use in it. It was eventually decided that their Sumatra Mandheling would work best with the stout flavours as their is a smoothness and roundness to the coffee, with no bitterness, that works well with the roasted barley flavours of the stout. Brock roasted the beans fresh for us and took us through the making of a perfect espresso so that the best of coffee would be used in the stout.

“I loved the idea of a stout coming out with our coffee in it – it’s an idea I played around with before back in Oz and I’m delighted to have had an input in the type of coffee being used, as well as teaching Cormac about brewing the perfect shot of espresso. It’s great that small local producers can work together on these types of projects and pool our knowledge and passions to create a collaborative product like this”

“This Sumatran Mandheling we have sourced is slightly aged and dry processed, thus enhancing flavours and body even further. These qualities add to the characteristics of the stout and don't stand to conflict with desired outcomes.” - Brock Lewin, Badger and Dodo

Tasting notes:
A rich, full-flavoured stout with a powdery dry chocolate mouthfeel. A smoothness from the oats adds balance to the roasted bitterness while in the background there's a subtle hint of the earthy espresso flavours which leads to a dry coffee finish.

Bottle conditioned beer. Best served at 10-12°C.
Suitable for Vegans.
